The Belize Police is a progressive department working in partnership with the community. We demand very high standards from all our staff, police and support, to maintain and improve the service we offer to the people of Belize. There are a range of opportunities and responsibilities available to police staff, police officers and volunteers in all types of different areas. There is also the Special Constabulary, the volunteer part of the Police Service. Special Constables work in their spare time and make a vital contribution to the overall service we offer, and allow local people to give back something to their community. For Police purposes, the Belize Police Department is divided into six judicial district formations, and in turn these jurisdictions are further divided into local policing sub-formations. These reflect local geographic communities and give the police the opportunity to address local problems at source.Throughout the county there are 12 sub-formations, each commanded by a senior officer; i.e. officers of the rank of Inspector and above. They are responsible for the day to day policing of their sub-formation but receive guidance, support and, where necessary, additional resources from the divisional district formations. Our Department's Headquarters, at Belmopan, gives direction and support to enable the formations to police within the framework of national, as well as local, plans. It also houses the department's communications centre, the training school and many other specialist departments. The Belize Police has a current strength of over 1,200 police officers and over 200 civilian police staff. |
